When the surf is bad, it’s hard to find motivation to leave the house. Last week was one of those days; we spent all Friday in bed, probably still in a Halloween candy coma. When you don’t have a reason to leave the bed, why should you?
The Santa Ana winds are back, and it’s not looking great out there, so we took the chance to do something I love… visit the Getty Villa!”

Why I love it
When you say Getty in Los Angeles, you directly think about the Museum, up the hills longing the 405. And for sure, this museum is great. But the Villa feels much more special to me.
It is free, just like the museum, with a fee for parking ($25) if you don’t wanna walk up or take the shuttle. It is quiet, yes, even on “busy” days, because you can only enter with a time-slot ticket. I love that!
Once in, you can stay as long as you want, discovering the incredible Art Collection, exploring the garden, admiring the architecture or having a bite a the local cafe.

Where is it?
The Villa is located on a hill right off the PCH, next to Topanga Beach, facing the Pacific Ocean. It is definitely easier to get there by car, like almost everywhere in LA. But if you don’t want to pay for parking, you can play your luck on the PCH, there are some parking spot available nearby, but most likely taken over by the surf crowds. Even on bad days, you’ll have desperados on the water, yes.
Or you can take the bus from where ever you are. The 534 Metro bus takes you directly to a bus stop adjacent to the museum’s entrance. You MUST have the bus driver stamp your ticket in order to get into the museum. At the gate, you’ll be directed to a shuttle that will take you ‘up the hill’ to the museum. The wait could be 5 to 20 minutes.

Antiquity
The Getty Villa’s antiquities collection is like a time capsule from ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria, bringing to life an array of treasures that span from 6,500 B.C. to A.D. 400. Wandering through, you’ll see everything from dramatic Greek sculptures to intricate mosaics and pottery. It’s all set in a replica of a Roman villa, adding to the immersive experience. The collection really taps into the heart of mythology, ancient rituals, and daily life—a vibrant peek into how people lived, loved, and created thousands of years ago.
The Getty Villa’s collection goes beyond sculptures and paintings; it’s the everyday items—tableware, jewelry, and utensils—that make these ancient worlds feel personal and relatable. Ornate rings, necklaces, and bracelets show incredible craftsmanship and a timeless taste for adornment. Then there’s the tableware—elegant bowls, cups, and plates that wouldn’t feel out of place in a modern setting. These objects are more than artifacts; they’re a reminder of shared human experiences across millennia, bringing us closer to our ancestors through the simple beauty of the things they cherished.

Architecture
The architecture of the Getty Villa is a masterful nod to the grandeur of ancient Roman villas, inspired by the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum. It’s beautifully recreated with columned courtyards, marble statues, frescoed walls, and gardens that feel like stepping back into antiquity. Yet, modern additions enhance the experience seamlessly—there’s the open-air amphitheater where light and shadow play off the travertine stone, a café that blends into the gardens, and contemporary galleries that complement the main structure, letting history breathe in a thoughtfully modernized space.

Garden
The Getty Villa gardens are a journey through history themselves. The Roman atrium, with its central fountain, is a cool, marble-clad oasis that draws you into the heart of the villa. Outside, the terrace opens up to vast views of the Pacific, blending the natural beauty of California with the elegance of ancient Roman design. Then, there’s the herb garden—a little gem that changes with the seasons, overflowing with fragrant plants once used in ancient kitchens and medicine. The mix of historical richness and California sun makes the whole experience feel alive.
