Prompt n*4

Daily writing prompt
The most important invention in your lifetime is…

Well, I will always remember the day Apple introduced the concept of the iPhone, that day, I knew our world was about to change forever.

January 9, 2007. I was living in Belgium, and I am still studying. Daiki was in Japan, in school too. We were long-distance and called each other through Skype whenever we could. In between, there were not many ways to communicate besides emails.

That day, on each side of the world, we both watched the video of Steve Jobs presenting the notion of a cellphone without keyboards, with an infinity screen malleable at will into a camera, an iPod and very soon a computer.

It was incredible. If the internet is the ONE invention of our time, it appeared before me, and developed slowly, step by step. This was different. It was a door open to a multiverse, and that tool was suddenly gonna become an extended part of our bodies.

That day, without being able to put words or images on what the future would look like under that new reign, I could feel it was a turn, and today 18 years later, knowing what we all know, I think it was more of a 180° than a true step into the future.

I might be a little cynical here, but sometimes, I feel all this knowledge, all this communication and proximity we gained through the iPhone could have made us ONE big humanity, but instead, here we are, divided as ever, closeted in our “communities” and bubbles, only hearing what resonates the narrative we already decided to believe.

Thank you
